#SHAWSHANK SOUNDS LIKE YOUVE DONE TIME ALL OVER NEW ENGLAND MOVIE#

I don't think they wanted to come out with the movie right away because of its subject matter and the state of the union. We had a little more time by accident because of that. Sam came in with some very specific ideas. It's not necessarily pointing toward feeling, but it's laying a rhythmic base for how feeling can be interpreted. Rhythm in movies gives pace but also neutrality. He'd been listening to some of my music, one score was Unstrung Heroes, and he liked how it pulsed. All the percussion instruments began with a Sam concept. He has been very loyal to many of his collaborators, so you have to love that about him. You could see his eyes darting as we would work together he would see that music was malleable and fluid. He was eager and such a quick learner, an amazingly quick study. Therefore, I have to be respectful to the creator even if I'm in disagreement, without being a doormat. I have to always remember that, that as good an idea as I think I might have, it's still in service of an idea that I did not create. You try to make sure ultimately respectful of the decisions she makes, because it's her movie.

The title of it interested me because, "All right, it's 'unstrung.' What kind of whacky thwackys can I put into this that will give character and allow me to explore color and phrase and shape?" In Diane's case, I shared ideas and got a sense of what she likes and doesn't like. I've always been such an admirer of her comedy and of her as an actress. I just remember meeting with Diane Keaton and thinking what a lovely person she was. I don't think I specifically thought of Christmas - maybe insofar as trumpets and bells and some baroque brass writing, which can put you in a Christmasy place, with the metals and hand bells and song bells. There is something Christmasy about that movie, with the snow and New England. I did read Little Women, but decades ago. It was slightly intimidating, having not spent much time on a podium, period, so getting in front of that group was crazy. Little Women was the first time I went to London to record at Abbey Road with the London Symphony Orchestra. Image Credit: Columbia Pictures/Photofest The question was: How could I not make this a worse movie, with no less character and personality? We often start that way. Frank Darabont showed me a three-hour version of Shawshank early on without a stitch of music in it, and it was riveting. We've gotten to know each other better by virtue of proximity with Jarhead, Skyfall, Wall-E . It was like, "Wow, this looks great." There are moments where you just take for granted what's put in front of you. Shawshank was the first time I worked with Roger Deakins. I'd ask when the last time you saw The Shawshank Redemption was, but in the spirit of the film and the metaphor, I'll as a more appropriate question.I was double nominated that year with Little Women . Like a freshly polished pair of shoes, it stands out if you know what to look for, and it serves you right. The Shawshank Redemption will always be his crown jewel, as it has not aged a day since its first viewing. They've enjoyed the hell out of it for the two decades it's been around, and it looks like it'll still be going strong more than two decades from this very writing.įrank Darabont managed one of those rare feats in Hollywood: he knocked it out of the park with his first at bat, and he has continued to impress ever since. Much like the prisoners who lived in the cells at the jail it told its story in, people believed in the story of Andy Dufrense and his pal Red. It's no fluke that The Shawshank Redemption became a slow-burning hit after its home video release. The main thrust of The Shawshank Redemption is that no matter how wicked we are, no matter how far gone or ruthless people may see us, you can always turn it around with kindness and generosity. Nor was it the type of story that Stephen King was setting out to tell in his original novella. That's not the type of movie that Frank Darabont was setting out to make. While a fair share of people who didn't deserve to die did just that, to have followed up the investment of all that time and energy into Red's parole hearings with a tragic suicide would have just crushed the audience like there's no tomorrow. If Red had killed himself at the end of The Shawshank Redemption, the whole film would have collapsed on itself.
